Sokoto State's Remarkable Rise in Internally Generated Revenue: A Testament to Effective Governance


In a remarkable display of fiscal prowess, Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, proudly announced a substantial surge in the state's Internally Generated Revenue (IGR). From a commendable N2.6 billion to an impressive N3.8 billion within the span of less than a year, the surge underscores a tangible testament to effective governance and astute fiscal management. Governor Aliyu shared this remarkable achievement while addressing the Annual Conference of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria in Abuja on Tuesday.

Governor Aliyu attributed the significant improvement in Sokoto State's IGR to a series of strategic measures implemented by his administration aimed at enhancing tax collection and management. Acknowledging the challenges posed by sharp practices that plagued revenue collection and utilization upon assuming office, Governor Aliyu emphasized the pivotal role of innovative reforms in sanitizing the revenue collection and management system in the state.

"With concerted efforts, we revamped the taxation system, fostering transparency and efficiency in revenue collection and management," Governor Aliyu asserted. The palpable results of these reforms have not only bolstered revenue generation but have also facilitated the judicious utilization of funds, thereby catalyzing tangible improvements in the quality of life for Sokoto State's populace.

Governor Aliyu highlighted the tangible outcomes of the surge in IGR, citing a plethora of people-oriented projects and initiatives aimed at addressing critical infrastructure deficits and enhancing socio-economic development. These initiatives encompassed the construction and rehabilitation of road networks, provision of potable water supply, empowerment programs, and initiatives aimed at enhancing healthcare services, among others.
